A decline notice is the communication telling the borrower that a credit application or request was not approved.
Decline notice means the communication telling the borrower that a credit application or request was not approved. It may be brief or more detailed depending on the lender, product, and process involved.
Decline notice matters because it is often the borrower’s first clue about what part of the file or application needs closer review. Even a short notice can tell the borrower whether the next step should be checking the credit file, reviewing affordability, or clarifying identity or income information.
It also matters because borrowers often treat a decline as mysterious and final. In practice, the notice can point toward a usable next step, such as requesting a Consumer Disclosure or reviewing the Credit Application that led to the decision.
In Canada, decline communication varies by lender and product. Some lenders give only broad reasons, while others identify whether the issue was file quality, affordability, verification, or overall product fit. If bureau information was part of the decision, the borrower may need to check whether the relevant file at Equifax Canada or TransUnion Canada contains something unexpected.
That is why a decline notice should be read as an orientation point rather than as a full explanation by itself. The borrower may still need to connect it to Creditworthiness, Affordability, or recent inquiry activity.
A borrower applies for a line of credit and receives a decline notice saying the application could not be approved at this time. The notice does not provide a full underwriting memo, but it tells the borrower to review their file and recent borrowing profile instead of guessing blindly.
Decline notice is not the same as a detailed reason-by-reason underwriting report. It may only signal the broad direction of the decision.
It is also not the same as Prequalification. A borrower can receive a positive early indication and still later receive a decline notice after full review.
